Information for parents

  • This booklet includes information about schools, the UK education system and services in Bracknell Forest in the Portuguese language and the Polish language,

  • Dgteaz- excellent site for standard letters for parents translated into a wide range of languages
  • www.parentcentre.gov.uk - a DfES website that provides leaflets and information about the English education system available in 14 different languages

  • Translations of leaflets on curriculum topic: these are designed to support parents in helping their children with homework. The translations are available in Bengali, Chinese, Cantonese, Greek, Gujarati, Hindi, Punjabi, Somali, Turkish, Urdu and Vietnamese.

  • A website to help multilingual families in the UK meet up and ensure they make the most of being multilingual. Includes online forum for finding and communicating with families in the same geographical area and resources that are categorised by language.

  • Peterborough and Cambridgeshire Connexions provides information about education and training choices at 14, 16 and 17 in Bengali, Cantonese, Czech, Gujarati, Polish, Portuguese, Punjabi and Urdu.Download from links given below:

Information for teachers  

  • www.naldic.org.uk - National Association for Language Development in the Curriculum. All aspects of EAL teaching and research are covered - with excellent links and updates.
  • www.multiverse.ac.uk – A website for teacher educators and student teachers/trainees with comprehensive resources that focus on the educational achievement of pupils from diverse backgrounds including those with EAL
  • www.CiLT.org.uk - Centre for information on Language, Teaching and Research - details about awards available in a range of languages and links to exam boards

  • Assessment of pupils learning EAL (www.standards.dfes.gov.uk/keystage3/respub/en_assess_eal).

  • Marking Progress Training materials for assessing EAL.

  • ww.londongt.org/real. An organisation that aims to improve the quality of identification, provision and support for gifted and talented learners from the black and minority ethnic (BME) and EAL populations, especially underachievers. Resources will be on this site from summer 2008.

  • EMAonline access to EAL and bilingual teaching materials developed by Birmingham , Leeds and Manchester LEAs with funding from the DfES. It contains many practical ideas and links.

  • www.nationmaster.com - useful background information about a pupil's home country: every aspect is covered - downloadable maps and photographs are available
